Former Westcliffe resident Curtis Jay Sato died on October 25 and began his journey onward. He shared through his heart these words: “Love heals, Love surrounds us, Love is truly what we are made of, Love is walking by Faith, Love carries me Home to be with my Lord.”
Curtis attended Hazel Goes Cook Elementary, Hilltop Junior High School, and Hilltop High School. He trained in horticultural work, along with brake and mechanic work, and machinist work. In the early 70s, he worked at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center in downtown San Diego. He also worked at the City of La Mesa in the Road Maintenance Department, and his last employment was at the Custer County Road and Bridge Department in Westcliffe.
Some of the highlights of his life were that he loved children and was a big part of Jenny Zein’s life, encouraging her to pursue her opera singing career. Also, he has been like a father to Nicholas and Milo, Laura’s McColley’s children. Curtis loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, enjoyed nature photography, especially shots of the Moon, drawing, and being out in the mountains or near the ocean. Curtis also had the time of his life as he had the opportunity to go to Italy.
Curtis, son of Jyuichi and Mariko Sato, brother of Joy Mari Sato, significant other to Laura McColley and her children, Nicholas and Milo, best friends with Irad Endelman (Denise), a cousin to many living in Chula Vista, Coronado, San Diego, Los Angeles, Japan, Florida, Portland, England, Temecula, Boise, Idaho, and Hawaii.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, November 8, at the Cypress View Mausoleum, Mortuary and Crematory. A committal service was held on Monday, November 10, at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in San Diego.
