Westcliffe’s living legend: Melody DeBenedictis – art, music, and mustang grace

What makes a living legend? It’s not just talent or tenure. It’s the consistency of heart. It’s using your gifts – even amid challenge – to uplift others, speak truth, and preserve beauty. It’s a life lived out loud, but with humility. That’s what makes Melody DeBenedictis more than an artist. It’s what makes her a living legend.

Art with purpose

From her private studio in Westcliffe, Melody brings the wild American West to life. For over 15 years, she has used visual art, photography, and songwriting to tell the story of the wild mustangs and the Western lands they roam. She travels the backcountry to photograph these powerful creatures in their natural environment, and from those images, she recreates breathtaking scenes that stir the soul.

But it’s not just about beauty – it’s about preservation. Melody’s work raises awareness for the mustangs’ plight, celebrating their resilience while quietly advocating for their protection. Her brushstrokes and ballads are infused with reverence, reminding us what it means to be wild, free, and deeply connected to the land.

Music born of the range

Melody’s art doesn’t stop at the canvas. A songwriter and musician, she’s recorded and toured alongside her husband Karl, translating her time on the range into song. Her lyrics are shaped by the wind, the dust, and the silence of wide open spaces. They tell stories of survival, spirit, and the rhythm of nature.

Strength in transparency

Melody also shares her personal journey through cancer – not for sympathy, but as a beacon for others. Her openness and grace in the face of hardship have inspired countless others walking similar paths. “Whatever challenges and outcomes we face, we get to choose how we navigate life.” She told me. “Live big!” And she does. Melody is donating a piece of her original art to help raise funds for an elderly veteran couple in need of safe shelter before winter. While undergoing her own treatment, she’s still giving! Still creating. Still showing up.

A Studio of Soul

Her studio isn’t open to the public – unless you ask. One quick call is all it takes! I did. And stepping inside felt less like entering a studio and more like opening a living book of the American West. Each painting hung like a chapter: wild mustangs in motion, weathered peaks, untold stories of quiet strength. The walls speak – and the views? A full 360 degrees of mountain majesty. It’s not just a workspace. It’s a sanctuary of soul.

Because some legends don’t wait to be remembered, they’re right here – painting, playing, healing, and helping. Melody, you are one of them.
