Fire Chief and Sheriff encourage locals to sign up for emergency notifications in Custer and Fremont

Wildfire season is currently active across Colorado and the western United States. Last week, Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared disaster emergencies for four wildfires in western Colorado, as well as a larger fire in Utah that has crossed the Colorado state line. These developments highlight the urgent need for preparedness among residents, especially in Custer County.

Both Custer and Fremont counties utilize the Everbridge system for emergency reverse notifications. This system provides critical, real-time alerts regarding wildfire threats, evacuation orders, and other public safety emergencies. However, residents must opt in to receive these potentially life-saving notifications.

How to register for Everbridge alerts

• Who Should Register? All residents of Custer and Fremont counties, including seasonal visitors and second property owners.

• Why Register? Notifications can provide timely warnings and instructions, giving families the best chance to respond quickly and safely in an emergency.

Preparedness and evacuation guidance

• Always be ready to evacuate: If you feel threatened by wildfire–whether or not an official evacuation notice has been issued–take immediate action to protect your family and animals.

• Have a go-kit prepared: include essential items such as medications, important documents, clothing, food, water, and pet supplies.

• Know your evacuation routes: Plan multiple ways out of your neighborhood in case roads are blocked. The Custer Emergency Evacuation Map can be downloaded here: https://custersheriff.colorado.gov/sites/custersheriff/files/2025-02/FireEvac.png.

• Stay informed: Monitor our Facebook page, local news, weather updates, and official county communications for the latest information.

Key Reminders

• Wildfire threats can escalate rapidly; do not wait for a formal notice if you feel unsafe.

• Registering for Everbridge alerts is a crucial step in staying informed and prepared.

• Encourage neighbors, friends, and family in the area to sign up for notifications and review their own evacuation plans.
