For almost every high mountain former mining town along the Arkansas River, there has always been the question of what would happen when the mining boom ran out. Even to this day, the regional economy is always focused on how to bring cash to communities that lost what founded them in the first place: mining.
Local author Afton Rorvik explores the first attempt to revive a dying mining town in her book, The 1896 Leadville Ice Palace, which vividly details the ambitious and often disastrous effort to attract tourist dollars.
Rorvik will be giving a presentation at the West Custer County Library on Thursday, June 26, at 4:30 p.m. There will be snacks and prizes, including free book giveaways.
