Former District Attorney Linda Stanley had a legal career that was constantly under threat because she failed to respond to or file paperwork with the courts and others correctly. Once again, Stanley failed to respond to a lawsuit that was filed by Custer, Fremont, and Chaffee Counties that claimed she had misspent public funds and that she owed that money to the taxpayers in the 11th Judicial District.
“The people are owed this money, and we aim to get it back,” Fremont County Commissioner Kevin Grantham stated in January.
And now, because Linda Stanley failed to respond to the lawsuit filed three months ago, the three counties asked the court for a default judgment, which was granted on March 4.
The only question remaining is how much the judgment will be against Stanley. The lawsuit claimed that Stanley owed $99,519 in money she misspent for personal matters. The lawsuit asks that the court triple the amount plus add $378 in court costs for a total of $298,936.80.
District Judge Lauren Swan ordered that a hearing be set for March 21 at 4:15 p.m. where the judge will take testimony from the county attorneys involved in the case plus the process server who was able to serve Linda Stanley the lawsuit in December and that she responded by throwing the paperwork in the dirt and walking away.
