Free legal clinic to help those without attorney access

The free monthly Virtual Pro Se Clinic (VPC) clinic is being held as scheduled on Wednesday, January 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. However, instead of clinic patrons coming to West Custer County Library, the local library staff will schedule personal telephone appointments; call the library at 719-783-9138 to be added to the sign-up sheet. Space is limited.

The library staff will schedule appointments using the online Second Wednesday Google scheduler, and the volunteer attorney will call each clinic patron directly by telephone. For this reason, it is especially important that a reliable phone number be included for scheduling clinic patrons.

The clinic is for persons who have no attorney. Via computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the processes and procedures for legal issues in the areas of family law, civil litigation, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, veteran’s benefits, and civil protection orders.

The volunteer attorneys do not represent participants just because they help people at the free clinic. The service is for information only, and is no substitute for legal representation. Participants have the right to retain an attorney of choice at any time, and are advised to do so.

In addition, www.checkerboard.co provides one-click access to all forms, statutes, videos, instructions and flow charts for each of over 50 different types of Colorado civil cases. The checkerboard also seamlessly connects users with free access to over 160 different web sites, ranging from Colorado’s state judicial site, to Colorado Legal Services, to the Law Library of the Library of Congress.

Also, a new Colorado Court App is now available for free download to Android smartphones. (The download link for the Colorado Court App is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.conduit.app_71987d14d3f040a1af1d188370009e43.app)

The Colorado Court App provides ready access on smart phones to already-existing free legal resources on the Internet, with one-click connection to courts’ web sites, forms and instructions, public record pages, the Colorado Bar Association’s Find-A-Lawyer program, and the aforementioned checkerboard.

These programs are supported by the Access to Justice Committee and our local courts. Please don’t hesitate to email morgan@hayday.org or call 303-520-6088 with questions.
