5/18/2017 One deputy quits, one on leave pending inquiry
Sheriff Shannon Byerly released the following statement to the public last Tuesday, May 16: “On May 4, 2017 Sheriff Byerly received a complaint from a citizen regarding a traffic ticket he received and subsequent court proceeding. A preliminary investigation into the complaint resulted in the opening of an Internal Affairs Investigation. “On May 10, 2017 Deputy Carl Dryer and Code Enforcement Officer Charles Cox were placed on Administrative Leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. That investigation is ongoing and further comment is not permitted. “On May 12, 2017 Deputy Carl Dryer submitted his resignation to Sheriff Byerly effective immediately. “No further comments on the matter will be made at this time.” In releasing the statement, Sheriff Byerly noted that he “cannot comment on the specifics of the complaint because we are waiting on some specific documentation to complete the investigation. “I hope this clarifies any rumors out there and at least puts them at bay until we can release the final findings.” He also added that anyone can have access to the Sheriff’s Office policy on how complaints and Internal Investigations are handled. The non-emergency line is 783-2270.
