|Early May has already seen Custer County School activities that are, so to speak, the beginning of the end—the end of the school year marked by all the celebrations and special events that go into that passage. So, for example, last week, an Excellence in Education Volunteer Appreciation reception was held Wednesday in the High School Commons with refreshments and entertainment. So too, the FFA Parent-Member Banquet convened in the West Gym last Sunday evening.
In the Elementary School, the First Grade has already enjoyed their field trip to Pueblo Zoo and Nature and Wildlife Center, and the Fourth Grade their Space Day. The remaining activities for the Pre-K and Elementary students include today’s Third Grade field trip to Cave of the Winds, and the Pre-K and Kindergarten field trip to the Pueblo Zoo. Next Monday, the Fifth Grade takes their field trip to the Sand Dunes; on Tuesday, the Second Grade will be going to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and at home the Fourth Grade hosts their Karate Recital at 2:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. A week from today, May 17, the Fourth Grade field trip journeys to the Royal Gorge and Dinosaur Experience.
The end of year Elementary Awards Assembly will be held on Monday, May 21 at 8:15 a.m. in the West Gym, and the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Grade Triathlon follows the following day, beginning at Altitude Community Fitness pool at 12:30 p.m. The K through Third Grade Field Day is the next day, Wednesday the 23rd, also at 8 a.m.
Thursday, May 17 is the last day of school for Pre-School, and the last day of school for Kindergarten and Elementary School is a week later, Thursday, May 24, dismissing at 1 p.m., with school buses running after the last lunch.
Middle School activities have been underway as well. The Middle School Dance was held last Thursday evening. The Awards Assembly will be held next Tuesday, May 15, in the Multi-Purpose Room at 8:15 a.m. The last day for Eighth Grade is Tuesday, May 22, with the Middle School Graduation ceremonies commencing that evening at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. The other Middle School grades dismiss for the last time on Thursday, May 24 at 1 p.m.
The High School Fine Arts Celebration opened last Tuesday with Band, Choir, Art, and Woodshop displays and performances continuing for two weeks, through Tuesday, May 22. The Academic Awards Assembly was held last night in the Multi-Purpose Room. AP testing in a variety of subjects gets underway tomorrow, and continues through next Wednesday. That day, May 16, also begins the Senior Final Exams in periods 5, 6, and 7, with further finals for Seniors on the following day, Thursday, May 17 in periods 1 through 4. That is also check out day for Seniors. The other High School grades have finals the following week, Wednesday and Thursday, May 23 and 24.
Then, all attention turns to the Seniors and their graduation. Thursday, May 24, at 6 p.m., Senior Night Potluck and Senior Video will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room and West Gym. The following day, at 1 p.m., mandatory graduation rehearsal convenes in the East Gym, and that evening the Senior Baccalaureate service will be held at 7 p.m. in a location to be announced.
Sunday, May 27 is the big day: Graduation. At 12:30 pm, a studio photographer will take a picture of the entire senior class in their caps and gowns in the Multi-Purpose Room. Then the graduates will remain as a class until they line up for the processional at 1:30 in the high school. At 2 p.m., the Graduation Ceremony begins in the West Gym.
