|The national war of discount retailers is spreading to the Valley and the new war-zone straddles the border of Silver Cliff and Westcliffe. Dollar General has announced plans to present its business proposal to the town of Silver Cliff on Thursday, September 21 at 5:30 p.m. in the Silver Cliff Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public but is only a presentation. No formal public comment section is planned.
According to Silver Cliff Zoning and Building Director Roger Camper, Dollar General has shown interest in purchasing the lot immediately to the west of the already established Family Dollar. This will place two national chain competitors side by side fighting for market dominance in the Valley.
For Dollar General, the plan is a continuation of a strategy it has employed in the neighboring city of Florence. Several years ago Family Dollar and Dollar General built stores next to each other. Eventually Family Dollar closed down leaving the shell of a metal building for over a year until the building was converted into a True Value Hardware store.
Dollar General is also completing a new building in Penrose that will open within the next two months.
According to Camper, the land that Dollar General is interested in buying is actually half in the Town of Silver Cliff, and half in Westcliffe. However, the towns had already come to an agreement that Silver Cliff will annex the remaining lot. Town attorneys will also be present at the Town Hall meeting to explain the process.
The Town of Westcliffe Board of Trustees is currently discussing creating an ordinance that limits any chains from starting businesses in the Town of Westcliffe.
